Christianity's Secret Weapon -- Shunning

Many of those who had become believers came forward and openly acknowledged their former practices. Moreover, a large number of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in public... Thus did the word of the Lord continue to spread with influence and power - Acts 19:18-19

Last year, Christian Pastor Terry Jones threatened to burn a Quran

What happened?

Christian Pastor Terry Jones received death threats.
His website was shut down.
The mortgage on his church's property was called in
The church's property insurance was canceled
The city of Gainesville threatened to charge the church for protection

This year, Christian Pastor Terry Jones followed through and actually burned a Quran.

What happened?

Twenty people died as the Islamic world lighted up even more than normal rate of burning for them
The US Secretary of State, the US Secretary of Defense, and the US President of the United States condemned Jones
England, the country who will not allow a Roman Catholic to hold political office, banned him from entering
Muslims burned Bibles in Pakistan
Muslims urinated on and burned Bibles in Australia
Muslims burned Bibles in Gaza.
And NO Muslims died, because, well -- there were no Christian riots.

When Christians reflect upon what has made our religion so strong while the teachings of the religion constrains us to be so weak, we have to wonder how we ever survived for 2,000 years.

I think the new movie "Agora" helped me to understand.

In my younger years, it was not uncommon for there to be tons of freedom from government, but there certainly was not freedom to do whatever you wanted.

The People ruled America and The People ruled by shunning.

If a man did not stay with his wife and kids, he could forget about a Christian manager hiring him.

If a woman committed adultery, no Christian would stone her, but if she did not "go and sin no more", then no Christian landlord would rent to her.

If a child did not obey his parents, then the only parents who would be shunned would be the parents who did not enforce discipline.

In the movie Agora, the Christians are displayed as an unruly mob who taunts the beliefs of others. They were a mob filled with Terry Joneses.

And the pagans, like the Muslims of today, became violent toward the Christians. This allowed the Christians to defend themselves when they fought back, taking control of the city of Alexandria in the process.

Later, again they taunted the so-called Jews, who followed the false text of the newly created Talmud. And again, the Jews committed an atrocity by stoning to death a number of Christians.

In my youth and in the early days of the Christianity, Christians believed their truth to be the one truth and they were not afraid to provoke others when they knew others to be dead wrong.

Scared to death of the beliefs of others, Christians of today will not survive.

Christian Pastor Terry Jones knows this well.

Christian Pastor Terry Jones knows, as did early Christians, that we need "book burning" in public of "evil texts".
